The AFC project consists of part new construction and the refurbishment of an existing early 20th-century light industrial unit at a brownfield site in King’s Cross. It is to create a new home for a pioneering school catering for those with mental health issues. The Anna Freud Centre For Children And Families is a charity partner for Heads Together, a campaign championed by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

The clients brief was to provide an education building which houses three conference rooms, back of house offices and new teaching facility including catering training for children with learning disabilities. The development will also host a range of other activities, including training and clinical research.

The project first commenced in 2016 after CES achieved planning permission under the London Borough of Islington‘s new environmental planning policies, and will complete onsite in March 2019. CES developed the sustainability and energy strategy for the building, including implementation of low carbon energy systems, natural ventilation, passive cooling and renewable energy sources including a photovoltaic array and networked CHP.  This enables the building to achieve BREEAM “Excellent” status and 47% reduction in carbon emissions.

To ensure that the project meets all of the client’s requirements CES has held monthly meetings with the client. CES have faced difficulties during the project like the architect explaining that the building is 20% smaller than it needed to be, so this has led to very intricate coordination in 3D. Water ingress into the building at the basement level has also made construction very difficult. Fortunately, all challenges were overcome and the project is nearing completion.
