A zero carbon, BREEAM “Outstanding” exemplar building within a conservation area, the development is designed as a simple, flexible enclosure with excellent natural light and ventilation.

CES were appointed as sustainability, energy and building services consultants for the pioneering UAL Arts Studio in Wimbledon. A zero carbon, BREEAM “Outstanding” exemplar building within a conservation area, the development is designed as a simple, flexible enclosure with excellent natural light and ventilation.

Sustainable measures designed by CES include use of dynamic modelling to optimise the North-South orientation of the building, a high-performance envelope designed to PassivHaus standards, controlled natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic solar collection. The scheme uses an innovative, light weight structure, enabling no wet trade construction, but environmentally achieving thermal heavy weight conditions.

Achieving the highest score in the education sector and the second highest BREEAM score in the world for its Design Certification, this zinc-clad flexible enclosure provides high-quality spaces with natural light and ventilation, linked to existing studios via a canopy structure with semi-outdoor storage.
